Chapter 17
Victoria
The keys dangled from Victoriaâs trembling fingers as she fumbled with the door lock of her Toyota.
From behind her, she heard Henryâs deep voice. âGive me the keys,â he commanded.
She jumped, terrified heâd slow her progression. She needed to get away. To catch her breath. She couldnât think straight when he was near.
He reached into her hand, easily prying the keys from her trembling fingers. Shoving them into his pocket, he positioned his body between her and the car.
âGive those back.â
âYouâre not getting into this car until Iâve got some answers,â he said and leaned against the driverâs side door, blocking her escape.
Victoria glowered at him. âYou canât keep me prisoner here.â
âWatch me,â Henry said.
Victoria crossed her arms, her feet planted firmly on the pavement, and took in his disheveled appearance. Dressed in an unzipped, blue, hooded sweatshirt that hung open to reveal his six-pack abs, and a pair of faded blue jeans that heâd been in too much of a hurry to button, he looked sexier than ever. âYouâre going to catch pneumonia.â
âYouâre one to talk.â He laughed sarcastically.
Rolling her eyes, Victoria tried to focus her attention on anything but the shirtless man standing before her, the sides of his sweatshirt billowing in the wind. âIs human trafficking to be a new sideline for Santana Construction?â Victoria asked ruefully. âItâs a great plan. First, you seduce your unsuspecting victim. Then rip the innocent womanâs home from her and, while youâre at it, destroy her business, too. Then sheâll have no will left to fight you after youâve left her homeless and without a penny to her name.â
âPlease,â he said, a trace of hurt lacing his plea. âTell me whatâs wrong.â Stepping forward, he covered both of her hands with his.
âWhat difference does it make? Now that youâve had a good fuck, youâre not going to prevent me from entering my own car.â Victoriaâs voice cracked. Her fingers clenched around the keys she wrenched away from him.
He grabbed her around the waist, forcing her against his chest. âDonât you ever refer to yourself as a good fuck! It wasnât like that. Damn it all! You know it was more than that.â
âLet go of me!â Victoria punched furiously against his chest. Legs flying, she kicked at his ankles, humiliated by the tears that streamed down her cheeks.
âDid I hurt you?â Henry breathed against her ear.
âNo,â Victoria said, wilting against his chest. Sobbing, she said through tears, âBut you will.â
âThings have changed, Victoria,â Henry said, loosening his hold around her waist. âPlease.â He extended his hand to her. âCome in with me. Weâve got a lot to discuss.â
Henry
Seated on the couch by her side, Henry ran his hand down the length of her hair. âThank you for coming back.â
Frederick lay curled into a ball beside Victoria, his head in her lap. âHow old is he,â she asked.
Henry reached to pat the dogâs head. âFreddy is getting to be an old man,â he said. âHeâll turn ten on New Yearâs Day.â
âI guess you canât forget his birthday.
